It's like the middle of Feb out ere! The weather is piss poor. I've only been back a trip and already peed off! 400 miles from home at min, shifting north west the last couple of days, as that is where the fish migrating. I am hoping to be in for the weekend...Sunday....to see my wife, children and newnorn son....can't wait! The lads also send their love ashore. Regards Shaun
Yet another summer's day! Good day to all! Well what can I say, we had a south west gale yesterday...not good....very big swell, but the darlings chewed their heads off for a couple of hours. Had a couple of hundred fish, but a lot of smaller fish. I think it's because the water temps dropped. The big obes are down deep, so can't see the lures. I will try to move to the north west up along the migratory route, if the weather will let me!
Found a few pieces of silver...had 300 fish! Captain Edwards is back! A mix of big uns and smaller ones, but absolutley chuffed! Back to reality today, at the moment but kepp believing. A big thanks has got to go to Oliver, my Spainish friend, who is the skipper of a swordfish boat from Burela. He calls me Jon istead of Shaun. Anyway a big kiss to Jax, the kids, will keep intouch Shaun.
Well ere we are....30 miles from home after a 3 day beating to get ere. Just about to throw the hooks over the side to commence el pescada bonito. My mate Oliver from Burela (funny name for a Spaniard I know) suggests we come another 100 miles south west, as the fishing is bueno. So ere we go again. So starting tomorrow I am chasing rainbows. The rate this season is going Jax, me and the children will have to emigrate to the azores. All the boys send their love to their families. Miss you Jax xx. Regards Captain Edwards.
Well Good Morning! Here we are agin after the first two trips, barely breaking even, we are hoping~praying for a third time lucky. We have asked the man from Del Monte to review their price plan, as things are looking very bleak at the present time on the old Nova. John on the Charisma, is not joining us just yet, as he is doing ok with the nets. Anyways we hope to start fishing on Thursday, that's about it for the moment. Regards Captain Edwards.
Been doing plenty of moving around to find fish. Now with a fleet of 45 Spanish boats but only managed to catch 32 fish yesterday.....hoping for better luck today 'cos we've got some catching-up to do.
Only 52 fish today.....very slow fishing with all our contacts. At least the weather is nice.
Boys are working well and have done a great job so far. Following our chat yesterday with Spanish we headed west and ended up with 119 tuna for the day. Everything is going well with us and we are back fishing alongside one of our Spanish friends who is catching well, so we will hope for more improvement tomorrow.
All the Best Tom
Glad to report we are back at sea. After about three days steaming south west from Newlyn we began towing late in the day and had 28 fish for a couples of hours towing. The weather is horrible with us strong westerly wind on top of a huge swell does not make for a pleasant trip so far. We are heading west after talking with our spanish friends who say there is better fishing with them.
Over and out Tom
The Cornish Tuna vessel Nova Spero under the helm of skipper Tom McClure returned to Newlyn on Sunday after their first trip of the season. The tuna were found over three days steam South West of Newlyn but working closely with the spanish fleet a fine trip of excellent quality handline tuna was put together. The tuna were a good run mainly between 6 and 8 kg fish and the crew put ashore over six hundred fish for their trip. As always close liaison with our Spanish friends helped and we are looking forward to another good season working with them.
Shaun Edwards remains on parturnity leave and the Nova Spero will sail again on Wednesday with Tom at the helm. The Charisma is expected to begin tuna fishing in a week or so after they complete one more tide catching turbot.
Look froward to reporting in later in the week when we are back amongst the tuna.
All the best
Tom
Nova Spero is along way from home (around 3 days steaming), but has found some fish. Saturday was a good day, caught 140 fish. Followed by 60 on Sunday, good run of fish between 6-10 kilo. Fishing in and around the Spanish fleet, all going well. Skipper Tom remains at the helm, while Shaun is on the Paturnity Leave. That's all for now. Tom
It's been a slog by all involved, and that's an understatement! But here we go again, which is good news for 2009.
First thing we gotta do, from the three of us, is thank Mr Paul Trebilcock and the one and only Nathan de Rozarieux. Not only for the work they have put in, but the mental strain that has been put upon them throughout. We got there in the end!
For my point of view last season was a great success, for all involved, for me personally I ended up having a back operation at Christmas! Apparently I had a prolapsed disc of the four and fifth vertabrae, but what ended up being worse, and they don't tell you about until you get home, was the constipation you're left with, which I struggled with for at least six hours....not nice and I'll leave it at that! A few other things happened but I won't bore you with it all. Even with all this stuff going on, I did plan to have a boat of my own for this season, but yet again no cigar! Maybe next season. So for this season I'll be working my own small boat. Shaun won't be aboard the Nova Spero for at least 4 trips, as his is on maturity leave, so Tom McClure and Shaun Williams will be taking the boat. I think they might have their hands full, but hopefully they'll enjoy it as much as I did. So for that reason I am hoping John Walsh on the Charisma will be filling for me and keeping you up to date on this year's tuna season. I am gutted I am missing out on it, but that's life. At least I'm free for any publicity shots...haha only joking would sooner be at sea!
I also better say that M&J Seafood, Falfish and local fish merchant M Stevens have the contracts for this year. I wish everyone the best with it.
Good luck with the blogging Captain Walsh.
