We are both 120 miles west of the sun.......ain't gonna shine anymore! A bit of a close proximity fishing today, plenty of boats going in all directions! Me and John are in the thick of it....ace day! John and us have 200 fish a picece. Fine weather at last....still raining though! Well after getting blown away into southwest Ireland, we have iced up, fuelled up & have some fresh provisions to stop scurvy setting in! We are away again, spoke to Walshy, he says the fishing has been poor with him, so we are going further north west as that's where all the pair teams seem to be heading. So we will see how we go eh! I hate to say it but I reckon the tuna are to far up for this time of the season, they should be a degree of latitude further south. The French skippers I have spoken to seem to agree. I just hope and pray they hang around for another 4-5 weeks, so we can get 2 or 3 more trips. Anyways keep you all posted. Regards Captaino.
Well we are in tied up along with 24 French tuna boats. Bloody good job too, it's howling over here....westerly severe gale force 9 slowly easing off tomorrow night. John's ok he stayed out, each to their own I suppose. Anyway we managed to get transport sorted out to land our 400 fish and send them back to England for the weekend. Cornish lin-caught tuna is pure quality and totally environmentally friendly.....let's not forget that! Anyway it's ice, fuel, grub then away again asap! Poxy weather has broken....not that it really settled in the first place! A big anti-climax compared to yesterday! Me and the boys were expecting 'big licks'! Yep for six hours you wouldn't think that there was tuna in the sea! anyway the afternoon/evening gave us a days work - 75 fish! Which I am happy about, but it just goes to show with this job, one day the tuna are going ballistic and the next day very little! This job is so unpredictable! Walshy turned up today....he had 70 fish! We are on our way to Castletown, a small harbour just north of Bantry Bay, Ireland, to shelder from the severe gale the coastguards are dishing out. I hope and pray we'll be able to get away again in the next 24 hours, but shall have to wait and see. At least I will be able to get some sleep! Hugs and kisses to Jax and kids. Captaino
What a difference a day makes! Piss poor weather - southerly 6 to 8. It's been pissing it down all day.....I mean all day! One week I'm in the Canaires lying on the sand next to Jax watching the kids play in the water, next week I'm out here getting soaked to the skin with severe backache! But it's been worth it! Shit hot fishing today...they've been chewing their little heads off! We ended up with 310 fish....woosh! Nice fish too.....I'm chuffed to bits! Severe forecast for Wednesday so I might have to run for port on the west coast of Ireland. Captaino.
Here we are again after a lovely holiday with my family! It's back to reality wuth a bump....to put it mildly! Day one ....crap! It's been crap weather...no fish! From what I can gather, two boats towing a big, big trawl at night are way up north for the time of year (west of dingle),which could mean a shorter season for us. What with the weather like it is up here. Being on the edge of the continental shelf you get big, big sea up here, it is totally different to the Bay of Biscay. To far for an old man in an old boat! News from the Charisma: They had 70 fish on Saturday and 133 on Sunday. The Charisma is coming into land tomorrow, at the minute they have a rough total of 600 tuna.
We had quite a good day today....104 fish! We had 8 fish while we were about to get lines in, but it was too dark to continue, which was a pity! Nice sized fish throughout the day....slow but steady fishing! It was very foggy to start with less than 5th of a mile visability at times and all the boats steaming around you at 6+ knots. It got too much so I pulled away from there....we weren't catching anything there anyway so went to a clear patch and started fishing. We're landing Sunday morning with 615 fish on board.....I am quite pissed about. Possibly could have had more if the weaher had been better, but the tuna are a good size! I can honestly say that I have enjoyed this trip, it has been great fun sailing with a very professional and hard working crew....have a holiday anytime you want Shaun! Had a good day today in many ways. Weather was good....lovely and calm! Even saw the sun and had to put sunglasses on....bought them especially for this trip! We had 125 fish nice sized ones. We started fishing right amongst the Spanish from first light and that helped without a doubt, the only problem was it got a bit foggy, with the visability down to a third of a mile. At one point I counted 25 Spaniards around us within a 3 mile range, on the radar. That was nerve wracking I can tell you! There is about 55 Spaniards fishing up here at the minute, of all shapes and sizes....saw the smallest so far by far, about 45 feet long, nice boat but a long way from home. Anyway Friday is our last day, the final push and then home! Tom
The Charisma is about 25 miles west of the Nova Spero! Yesterday was their third day of fishing and they caught 93 fish! We'll hear more from John tomorrow.
