78 Fish - Best Day Yet

Posted by Quentin Knights in cornish line caught tuna

Long day! weather is flat calm - light northerly breeze! Feed and fish everywhere, they don't want to play. The Spanish boats make us look like country bunkins. Were did we go wrong in this job, we're not stupid, but they put us to shame. It is worth our hierarchy looking at this, it's amazing what you can do with some support from the government! 78 fish for the day - best day yet! Shaun sends his love to Jackie and kids, Jimbo to Lisa and Jack, Barrie to Helen and kids, Ben to his parakeet, me - I hope my cabin is in one piece!

Trip Going Smoothly

Posted by Quentin Knights in cornish line caught tuna

Our fishing for the first day was 25 good fish, lost a few but not many. Going a lot more smoothly this trip. Not so many whales more dolphins! Will see what fishing brings today, we're off by ourselves as a bit too many boats where we left last trip. Will see what happens!

Towing to Biscay

Posted by Quentin Knights in cornish line caught tuna

Northerly 3 - overcast! We have been in touch with our Spanish friend Gervasio, he has said that there are 50 to 60 Spanish pole boats fishing in Biscay. John on the Charisma is with them and had 26 fish yesterday. We are towing down towards them, hoping for good fishing!

Tuna Fishing Not as Easy as it Looks

Posted by Quentin Knights in cornish line caught tuna

Reporting in from Biscay! Weather 3 to 4 north west wind. We had 37 tuna for the day. Tuna fishing not as easy as it looks, we lost several fish today - crew have got to watch the reels, you can't expect fish to jump aboard by themselves! You've got to play the fish, not just yank it in. Put fish in ice water today to try to keep shine on them, it worked but a bit more to do. I think we're in for the fish festival! This blog is keeping me from going insane and it's good to talk. Everything else is marvellous - loving it! Q Knights reporting from Biscay.

Wednesday was 'Bonito' Day

Posted by Quentin Knights in cornish line caught tuna

Weather is north west 4 to 5. Tuesdays fishing was not good - 11 or so fish! But Wednesday was 'bonito' day, about 64 of the little darlings! It's not a job, it's a lifestyle - long hours. But it's the best fishing method I've used. My hands are cut to pieces with line burns and cuts from playing the fish, and we still lost fish! When you get them in their colours are beautiful, but they lose it quickly. All the lures I've made are catching. Saw dolphins and whales today, and best of all we seem to be working together with the Basque fishing boats!

Searching and Steaming

Posted by Quentin Knights in cornish line caught tuna

Still searching and steaming east south east! Last night we talked with the Spaniards! We are way down in Biscay - Captain Edwards is doing his nut in, as very little is happening, but as we all know paitience is a vertue! Ere you tomorrow!

What a Buzz

Posted by Quentin Knights in cornish line caught tuna

Weather is northwest 6 to 8 - this job is menta! We've got all the lines out and they are working no problem. Had a full house, fish on all hooks at the same time, we got 45 fish in two days - not bad for beginners! Not many tangles for the weather we're havin, if the weather was fine it would be brillant. It's the best fishing I have done, what a buzz - fish and hooks going everywhere, Captain Edwards like a lunatic as ever and we have contact with our Basque friends again! Got to go and make more hooks up, all home made.

Bad weather and little sleep

Posted by Quentin Knights in cornish line caught tuna

We steamed to king arthurs canyon wsw of newlyn 250mm but no fish - weather been shit 6 to 8nw wind, its been an adventure already. Good news: spoke to our basque contact on big set and they have good fishing about 350 nm se of us so we’re steaming down to our basque friends to work with them - history in the making - seen plenty of whales no dolphins yet not had a lot of sleep but don’t need much with this job - fishing gear seems to be working well and looks the part that’s for sure - all the lines are out not many tangles yet touch wood!
